What the gurus are saying

At $200 to $375, this serum does plump skin and address fine lines, but reviewers found you can get similar results for much cheaper, especially in Korean skincare. The formulation includes solid ingredients like centella asiatica and rice bran oil, though the proprietary TFC8 peptide has less published research than other peptides, and some felt the price was largely for beautiful packaging.

"This is Augustinus Bader The Serum. I got this as part of a gift set, and I became irrationally stressed about it expiring before I could use it up, so suddenly my body was receiving a $300 serum treatment. [...] And listen, it was lovely. But would I ever spend that kind of money on a serum myself? Absolutely not."

"I [...] love to see more, I guess is what I'm trying to say. But they've got their patented baby. [...] In terms of [...] performance, for what this product promises it promises to reduce and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, help support natural production of collagen, improve elasticity, tightening and firming skin, support the skin barrier function for plumper more resilient skin with greater bounce back. I would say it does do all of those things."

"It doesn't have bad ingredients, that is one thing I will give Augustinus Bader is that their products do have good formulations, but I wouldn't say they're anything more mind-blowing than what I would say finding like Korean skincare products for maybe like a 50th of the price. It has great ingredients like centella asiatica and rice bran oil, but I feel like you're probably just paying for that packaging because I will admit it is beautiful."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
