What the gurus are saying

Waterproof mascara and eyeliner come off easily with this balm, and reviewers like it as the first step in a double cleanse. The less enthusiastic takes found it did not remove makeup as well as Clinique's Take the Day Off, called it outdated next to newer balms, and noted it is very fragrant. Those who react to natural ingredients may want to keep that in mind, since some reviews reported too much stimulation.

"From everything I remember, I did really like Green Clean. This is a small little thing. Good for your travel bag. This is their cleansing balm. I love a cleansing balm. It's the first step in a double cleanse."

"It feels like the starting point of a cleansing balm, and whilst it has nice ingredients and does the job, it's a little bit outdated. There are many more richer, more nourishing balms with better ingredients that just feel nice on the skin. It's decent but outdated, and I feel like it's been replaced by many. This was everywhere at one point, but now it just doesn't hold up. There's too many better options in today's standards for a cleansing balm in my opinion."

"But it's effective at removing blackheads and all my makeup, and the amazing thing about the Banila Co Clean It Zero is that after you cleanse it off, the skin is still very bouncy and moisturizing. I definitely recommend it for mature, dry skin. Some reviews said it caused too much stimulation on their skin, some people react to the natural ingredients, so keep that in mind."

"Mine is unpopular opinion, but this is going to be my B tier. I love it [...] to roll it because it melt very easily. [...] However, after I finish cleansing my skin is too tight. I agree because cleansing balms compared to the cleansing milks is of course it's not that lotioning, not that softer. Still I feel I don't really reach that often because my skin feels too tight. So I think now we have a better recipes. I see so many better cleansing balms."

"Banila Co Clean It Zero Original Cleansing Balm, I'd say smash for that one. Isn't my favorite cleansing balm, no. I think that it still makes your skin have a little bit of that film left over so it's not the best out there, but it's definitely a solid formula."

"I tried the Clean It Zero cleansing balm, which is the original. I didn't love it to start with. I was surprised at how much fragrance is in here, like it is really very very fragrant. It didn't really remove makeup better than my Clinique Take the Day Off cleansing balm, which I compare everything to because that is the best, so it wasn't as good as the Clinique, so for me it wasn't great."
~Yay
"This cleansing balm has a special place in my heart because it is the very first cleansing balm that got me into double cleansing. I love it for a couple reasons. Number one is it's really gentle and effective at removing waterproof mascara and eyeliner that I wear on a regular basis, and also it doesn't cause irritation, at least for me, for my eyes. And two, when you rinse it off it leaves minimal residue."

"I am using my water-based cleanser, which is my eight dollar Banila Co cleanser. I love the way that this one foams up but it does not strip the skin. Do not buy a luxury cleanser; save your money for a luxury peel instead."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
