What the gurus are saying

Topical diphenhydramine doesn't do much for skin, and both experts who reviewed this cream reached that same conclusion. They found it ineffective and agreed it's not worth spending your money on. The only real difference between them was how bluntly they expressed that view, but the verdict here is crystal clear: this cream isn't a recommendation for anyone's skincare routine.

"It's very common that people will grab this at the drugstore if they have poison ivy rash or some type of itchy, inflamed, bothersome rash on their skin. People think, 'Ooh, Benadryl is going to calm that down. Let's slather that on the rash.' Topical Benadryl is diphenhydramine. It's an antihistamine. So you would think that if you put it on your skin, it's going to decrease that sensation for itch and irritation."

"This is something I would never use, topical Benadryl, topical diphenhydramine. It's not effective topically. Itch is not going to be alleviated by topical diphenhydramine. If you've ever used this product and you found it effective, let me tell you how it's working: it has nothing to do with the Benadryl, which Benadryl is just a brand name for diphenhydramine, an antihistamine. It has nothing to do with that."
