What the gurus are saying

This lightweight oil cleanser stands out for rinsing clean without leaving a slippery residue, which dermatologists and skincare experts praise as rare among oil-based body washes. It hydrates well and breaks down sunscreen effectively, making it especially good for dry skin, eczema-prone skin, and families with children. The main thing to know: it does contain fragrance, so anyone with fragrance sensitivity may want to skip it.

"As a body wash this is so nice and luxurious, a little goes a long way so it's going to take forever to go through, and I love how hydrating it is. [...] It does lather a little bit but it's not super foamy, and that's actually what I love most about it. It's such a nice product and it's quite affordable, even the large size was pretty affordable, though I'd say try the smaller size first since you definitely don't need the largest size possible."

"The cleanser I'm currently using is the Bioderma Shower Oil. I really love this product. It's really gentle and it has tons of moisturizing ingredients in it. This does have a light fragrance, which is pretty unusual for a Bioderma product, but the reason for that is that this is really rich in lipids. Lipids are fatty substances they're in our skin and this is meant to replenish them."

"I got through a huge tub of the Bioderma. This is their oil-based body wash. I love an oil-based body wash because it just leaves my skin so hydrated. I actually think I prefer it."

"I love an oil in the shower after I've slightly dried off my skin and what I like most is that this is a dry oil so it doesn't hang around like other oils which I'm generally okay with but it sort of just disappears. I flew through it. It's just a shame I didn't buy a whole bunch more when I was in France because it's half the price."

"I love serums and oils of any kind for the body and I love Bioderma, so I figured I couldn't lose, and gosh was I right. I keep this in the shower and I apply it before I even get out. [...] It's a dry oil so my skin doesn't feel slippery or super super oily, and then I apply a lotion or a cream on top when I get out. This is glorious, it's kind of supercharged the softness of my skin and it stays put all day. The only downside is that I'm flying through it because I do use it every day now."

"Bioderma has a massive one, it's their Atoderm Cleansing Shower Oil for 30 bucks. It is not going to over strip your body, it's going to keep your skin nice smooth and supple."

"The Bioderma Atoderm Shower Oil is oily but hydratingly soft. [...] It's not a pure oil, it has glycerin in it as well as niacinamide. It [...] retails for 30 dollars and you do feel very slippery once you use it."

"If you're dry [...] and looking for that extra oiliness that your skin is craving, I'm going to give you one that I actually love to use on my body as well. It's Bioderma Atoderm Shower Oil. This is literally [...] heavenly and it's not very oily because one of my biggest pet peeves with oil-based cleansers is that most often they leave this oily residue that I just can't seem to get rid of, so I love this guy. It's a very lightweight oil cleanser."

"I really like the Bioderma Atoderm cleansing oil. This is a cleansing oil I recommend to a lot of my patients with eczema but it's also really good at breaking down sunscreen. So when your kid's in the bath or the shower they can apply this cleansing oil, it will help break down the sunscreen and then you can go in with a makeup eraser cloth to remove the rest."

"I really love this cleanser for dry skin. It's a very luxurious body oil that you massage into the skin. It's great for breaking down things like sunscreen, dirt, and grime, and it leaves your skin feeling cleansed but not stripped. You apply this to wet skin in the shower, you work it in, and then you rinse it off."

"I love this product for many reasons. It can help remove sunscreen, and [...] I find that this one by bioderma hits that sweet spot of being very gentle on the skin while also being very effective. [...] When I'm done using it, I don't feel this residual film on my skin like I feel clean but my skin does not feel dry or tight. It's [...] great for all ages and stages of life, though it does have fragrance so if you're particularly sensitive to fragrance I would skip this one."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Source: DermNet

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
