What the gurus are saying

Lactic acid every day, combined with UV exposure, raises concerns about compromising the skin barrier. The gel earns praise for its transparent, non-greasy hydrating texture with no white cast, suiting deeper skin tones well, but reapplication over makeup tends to pill and can look flaky by day's end, limiting all-day wear. It also lacks brightening ingredients for those with dull skin or hyperpigmentation.

"A big mistake they made with this product is they put in lactic acid, which is an exfoliating AHA. So imagine every day you're taking off the top layer of skin but then also UV is hitting the skin. This is a big mistake for us. In addition, there's no tyrosinase inhibitors in here. So if you have dull skin or hyperpigmentation from scars or from acne, there's nothing in here that's going to help you with that. So I don't really like this as an SPF 30."

"It just isn't strong enough for what I need with my melasma, especially everything how far my melasma has gotten better. I'm not going to risk messing it up to test something. It's probably okay for the average person, but not in my opinion if you're somebody concerned with anti-aging and sun protection. It's just not that impressive. Be sure especially with these US-based chemical sunscreens that you're reapplying because the protection they just can't offer as good as Japan, Europe, Korea."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
