What the gurus are saying

The bergamot and essential oils make this pricey mask unsuitable for anyone with rosacea, sensitive skin, or acne-prone skin. It does pull excess oil and impurities through its clay content, though reviewers note that performance is standard at this price point. Better clay masks exist that deliver the same benefit without these irritants.

"The best clarifying face mask went to the Caudalie C+ Instant Detox Mask, a beautiful classic that I've recently brought back into my routine and travel with. What I love is that my skin feels purified but it doesn't strip the skin, and it always leaves my skin looking really happy and evens out the skin tone, where a lot of clay masks irritate my skin. It's not over-drying, which is the main thing I appreciate, plus it's a pretty pink color. I feel like I'll never not love it."

"That said, it is a nicely formulated clay mask that dries down really nicely without over drying, and the grape is a nice antioxidant touch. For the price point I think it is decent, but you are paying for luxury fluff and there are better clay masks out there that do the same job without the potentially irritating ingredients."

Brand & Products I'll Never Review - Boring, Over Priced, Overhyped!
"It's a nice clay mask. But the viral hype killed the brand for me. What the hype was about was the mask drying and revealing areas of enlarged pores, which every single clay mask does. [...] But everyone kept saying look, [...] it's pulling gunk out of your pores, it's clearing out your pores, [...] when it's just where the mask settles on areas [...] where you have enlarged pores. [...] Dermatologists and estheticians were promoting this with misleading language [...] to sell a product."
BUDGET VERSIONS OF BEST SELLING SKINCARE 😙💵
"The price point is very decent for how much you get and what it is and how it feels. It's like a buttery clay that you leave on the skin and washes off without over drying your skin. It doesn't crack and doesn't feel itchy when it's on your skin, so it's really pleasant to use. [...] The overall brightening effects and evening of skin tone effects are very good."

"The Caudalie Instant Detox Mask, for the price point alone, pass, way too expensive. Caudalie is very bougie, I don't remember the ingredients but most clay masks I'm not crazy about, so I'm going to say pass, just because I know it's expensive."

"The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Mask [...] would be a good alternative since it's fragrance-free and lower price. This product targets people looking for more of a spa type experience, and it definitely gives you that with the wooden cap, the way the product smells, [...] and how tight it gets. But I understand why it went viral—it is visually and physically a very interesting experience—but again, I think there are probably better alternatives. I probably wouldn't use it regularly."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
