What the gurus are saying

Salicylic acid in a fragrance-free, lightweight lotion is the detail these experts keep returning to, since it helps smooth the bumps of keratosis pilaris. Reviewers say it sinks in quickly without feeling greasy, doesn't sting even on a paper cut, and its ceramides keep skin hydrated. Some gurus note that lactic acid may work even better on those bumps, so people with stubborn ones may want to compare.

"The CeraVe SA Lotion is something that you could layer over thinner products or under thicker products. It's generally the recommended approach for how to layer products, thinnest to thickest. [...] If you want a product that is going to be a moisturizer and is going to deliver the salicylic acid, then the lotion makes perfect sense."

AMLACTIN VS CERAVE 🤔 WHICH ONE IS BETTER FOR KERATOSIS PILARIS?
"It's around a dollar ninety four per ounce, about thirty cents more per ounce than AmLactin, but I actually do think it's worth it in the long run, you're [...] getting additional ingredients and CeraVe's ceramide technology does consistently demonstrate benefit in clinical studies. It's a lightweight lotion that absorbs quickly and isn't greasy, and in my experience it doesn't sting the way the AmLactin product does, even on [...] a paper cut."

"CeraVe SA Lotion contains salicylic acid, a keratolytic ingredient that [...] helps with corneocyte disaggregation in the upper portion of the stratum corneum, making it helpful for ichthyosis vulgaris."

"This lotion is completely fragrance-free and non-irritating, which makes it really good for sensitive skin. It contains salicylic acid, a little bit of lactic acid, and ceramides. If you don't like the thickness or the jar of the cream, this also comes in lotion form. It's a more lightweight alternative compared to the cream and it's a little bit easier to spread, especially if you're going to use it on large body surface areas like your whole arms and legs."

"If you want to treat this at home then using things like CeraVe SA Lotion are a great option because it's got salicylic acid in there that prevents buildup of milia"

"If the CeraVe Acne Control Wash is a little drying or irritating for you, you can use CeraVe SA instead. It has a lower percentage of salicylic acid, low enough that they don't disclose the percent on the bottle, but it would still provide some efficacy for acne, especially if you have very sensitive skin. Like all CeraVe products it has ceramides and MVE technology, so it's hydrating and tends to be less irritating than generic products."

"There's a big difference between CeraVe and the Inkey List salicylic acid. I personally prefer the Inkey List salicylic acid, but I think in certain countries CeraVe is better value for money. So go with the one that fits your budget. They're both very similar in terms of their active ingredients. The Inkey List is cruelty-free as a brand, so I would always go sit in the Inkey List, but if you can't get it, CeraVe is absolutely fine."

"I like salicylic acid as an ingredient to treat KP because we know that it collects preferentially in the hair follicles and the oil glands, so it does a really good job smoothing out the bumps of KP. [...] Research studies in our dermatology literature show that both salicylic acid and lactic acid are effective at treating KP, but lactic acid seems to be even more effective than salicylic acid."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
