What the gurus are saying

This product's heaviness divides reviewers. Some praise the original formula as a lightweight gel with built-in SPF, but others find it thick and uncomfortable, particularly those with sensitive skin or rosacea, who may experience flushing from the chemical sunscreen. As a tinted moisturizer, it works best as an extra layer over your regular sunscreen rather than your main SPF defense, since the amount you'd actually need for full sun protection would be impractical to apply daily.

"It does have SPF 25, but here's my biggest issues with this. Number one, while tinted moisturizers can be a great additional layer of sunscreen protection on top of your standard sunscreen, the reason why they are not effective at all as a sunscreen is because technically whenever we apply like an SPF 50 sunscreen we're supposed to use about a quarter size amount for our face and neck. And obviously if you're going to be like in an active sun exposure you need to be reapplying that sunscreen."

"If you have very sensitive skin, heavy moisturizers can sometimes make you feel flushed and overheated, and that's how this one was for me. If you have rosacea you may already be sensitive to chemical sunscreens and they may make you flush, so I would say pass on this."

"I've long been a fan of the original Clinique Moisture Surge, and they've now launched it with an SPF 25 in. While you cannot get your primary SPF from a moisturizer because you don't apply enough of it, I do think there's nothing wrong with layering SPFs. This is a beautiful lightweight gel that actually has an SPF 25 in it as well, and if you want a really nice lightweight hydrating moisturizer, it's great."
