What the gurus are saying

This powder sunscreen shines as a midday touch-up tool over makeup, and dermatologists praise its mineral filters and mattifying effect for oily skin, but experts firmly warn it cannot replace your morning sunscreen, you'd need an impractical amount of powder to get real protection on its own. Price splits the room at $55-69; some call it worth it for convenience and mattification, while others say similar products cost less and the brush applicator can be finicky about dispensing powder and needs regular cleaning. Best used alongside your main SPF, not instead of it.

"The Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush On Shield SPF 50 is not a foundation, but it earns its place in this category because it's one of the most practical SPF touch-up tools available. It's a mineral SPF in a brush format that you can use over makeup throughout the day. I like it as a reapplication. If you're somebody who applies SPF in the morning and never reapplies, this removes that excuse."

"I recommend the Sunforgettable powder sunscreen. It's an SPF 50. It's great for topping up your makeup later in the day or mattifying your sunscreen."

"Powder sunscreens I don't really recommend as like your first line of sunscreen protection, but for touching up or doing your part or something like that, it is great to have on hand and theirs is really the best one hands down."

"One I really like is from color science because it comes in like they're all mineral filters but comes in like a non-tinted as well as range of different shades"

"But two, it actually gives some mattifying property, so for individuals who get oily throughout their day, this powder not only will help to offer additional UV protection but also can help to mattify your face. It's also mineral based. I also love the fact that it comes in tinted and non-tinted, and the tint there's a range of different shades you can select from, so it's almost like powdering your face, and that tint also provides additional protection against invisible light."

"The Color Science brush on mineral sunscreen is $55. I don't want it got so expensive, but a lot of other brands have similar products, so you don't necessarily need to buy this one. This one's kind of a retouch one. I wouldn't trust this as your sole source of sunscreen. If you use this as a setting powder, that's the way to go. Don't use this as your sole source because you'd have to apply so much your face would look ridiculous."

"Brush on sunscreen like this is never enough coverage. You just cannot get the full coverage you need or the total protection in a brush on sunscreen like this. [...] The amount of powder that you would see on your skin that gives you the required amount of sunscreen you need covering your face, creating that shield that sunscreen needs to make on your face. This isn't going to do it. [...] As a sunscreen alone, no. [...] Even for touch ups, you're really not getting good coverage."
~Yay
"It's just a nice way to reapply your sunscreen. This will also help to mattify your skin a little bit as well, so if you're someone that gets really oily, then this is another great way to mattify and just cut down on some of that shine. But this is amazing, I love it."

"This is what I use to reapply my sunscreen on top of my makeup throughout the day. Powder options are great because we can't exactly put our liquid sunscreen on top of our makeup because then our makeup gets ruined, so this is a great option. I much prefer the powder option and it does an excellent job. I've been using this for several years. I have it in the shade Fair, which acts as a translucent shade so it doesn't pack on too much color when I'm using it throughout the day."

"But the price point, it's sixty nine dollars, and I can't justify that. As much as I want to try this product, I can't justify it, [...] especially because it doesn't replace the actual sunscreen in your routine, you have to use it alongside one, so on its own it's not going to serve much benefit. [...] Given that it's kind of a negligible item you don't necessarily need in your routine, that's very pricey."

"I've tried Colorescience and it's excellent, but it has some of the same problems with getting the powder out of the brush or the brush not being smooth enough."

"Color Science has it for 69 bucks same SPF, a mixture of titanium and zinc, and it comes in four shades. Most are on the lighter side of the spectrum because [...] the chemistry, the chemicals titanium are white, so it's hard to make them darker."

"Colorescience Sun Forgettable Protection Brush is great for when you're on the go. The applicator is not my favorite because you do have to kind of tap before you can get some powder out, but it's one of those that are great when you're out and about. Just make sure you clean the brush every once in a while because that can be unhygienic."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
