What the gurus are saying

Experts split on this beginner retinol: the 0.2% dose plus peptides promise anti-aging and plumping, but the rose water ingredient divides them, with some seeing a barrier-disrupting flaw and others praising the peptide-retinol synergy. The peptides are dilute, so start twice weekly and skip if your skin is very sensitive or flaky.

"What I love about the formula is the encapsulated retinol at the correct percentage, what I don't love is that it's not in an airless pump and it's got a quite sensitizing, irritating second ingredient. They really should have gone in with more of an anti-inflammatory base, and if they'd done that it would have scored a solid eight out of 10. But unfortunately, the way it's standing right now, I'd maybe give it a 5.5 out of 10, maybe six if I'm feeling generous."

"Deconstruct, it is the 0.2% retinol plus peptides. It is retinol plus peptides, but understand they are not as good to replenish or replace your multipeptide serum. So usually recommend anti-aging routines with peptides, but they are very few and they're in very less concentration. So consider this a gentle beginner friendly retinol serum and consider it also for anti-aging benefits with the peptides."

"Peptides also send signals for collagen synthesis, so the combination of retinol and peptides work really well in improving fine lines and wrinkles. The serum reduces fine lines, slows the process of photoaging, and also reduces dark spots. [...] It's a transparent liquid, it's slightly tacky, it's not oily. Use two to three drops on the whole face at night, apply it on a clean, dry face, never on damp skin. If skin is dry, you can use a layer of moisturizer first and then use the serum on top."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
