What the gurus are saying

Enzymes do the gentle exfoliating here, which makes it a kind pick for sensitive skin. Results are the sticking point. It works slowly, and some experts doubt it will fade melasma or stubborn sunspots, so those after fast change may want to give it more than two weeks. The one thing to keep in mind is the dropper, which may not keep the vitamin C as stable as an airless pump.

"Milk Marvel Dark Spot Serum from Edom. I didn't like this as much as the other product that is also in the empties, but I still do absolutely adore Edom."

EADEM SKINCARE REVIEW: 8 Weeks with B&A...I'm Impressed!
"It's a blend of niacinamide, encapsulated ethyl ascorbic acid, algae, licorice root, and papaya and pineapple enzymes. It's a beautiful formula with a texture that sinks in rapidly and never pills, but at sixty eight dollars it's a little expensive, and I ran into an issue with the packaging not closing right anymore. So, for me, I'll finish it, but it won't be a repurchase."

"You get anti-inflammatory effects from magnolia bark, enzymatic exfoliation from pineapple and papaya, [...] and a phytosterol system that supports the barrier. On pigmentation it's a softer, gentler pathway, not aggressive, though the [...] licorice root is at a lower dose. [...] It's genuinely naife safe and truly fragrance-free. The packaging is a dropper, adequate but [...] an airless pump would have been preferred to keep the vitamin C stable. At $48, it works, but it's slow and safe."

"In my opinion, this is a good product for mild hyperpigmentation or unevenness, but will probably not give you noticeable results on melasma, dark sunspots, or just stubborn hyperpigmentation that you have accumulated over decades of sun exposure, especially not if you expect results within weeks. It might help with overall brightness and evening out the skin over a prolonged period of time, but certainly not in the two weeks that are promised online."

"It's the Eadem Milk Marvel Dark Spot Serum. It's a funny name, Milk Marvel, but it's really gentle especially for skin that is a little bit sensitive. If you want to try an exfoliant and you're nervous about exfoliating because you have super sensitive skin, this is a good one to try."

"This is their Milk Marvel Dark Spot Serum. Now, this has enzymes, which is a more gentle exfoliating ingredient than, let's say, glycolic acid or lactic acid. So, I'm going to give this a try. We'll see how much brightening I get from this serum and how much exfoliation I get just to whisk off some of that flaky skin that I might get when I'm using my retinoids."

"I totally back this formula. I actually really love it. I'm surprised I've never heard of this brand, and I love that it's specifically targeted for skin of color because I think so many people of color and just the Black community overall is so tired of being recommended products that aren't suited for their skin, have ingredients that don't work well with darker skin tones, or just don't work. But that being said, this is a formula I would definitely use as well. It's really good."
~Yay
"This is a combination of amber algae, ethyl ascorbic acid, niacinamide, and Crambe abyssinica. It has no scent whatsoever and it comes in this dropper form. It is geared towards women of color to even out your skin tone, and I applaud them and I love what they stand for as a women-backed brand. I think that is a beautiful story."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
