What the gurus are saying

This balm earns consistent praise as a reliable multitasker that works as a moisturizer, hand cream, and lip protectant all in one. Dermatologists reach for it especially after skin treatments like lasers or when the skin barrier is compromised, since it seals in moisture and calms inflammation without irritation. It's equally suited to everyday dry patches, chapped knuckles, or slugging overnight if you want that level of occlusion.

"Aquaphor is like a leading healing ointment. So that is the easiest way. I would always always always recommend that if you're doing microneedling for the first time. That is your post care. Hyaluronic acid which occurs naturally in your skin. Water just to freshen it up for a little bit. Cover the whole thing with Aquaphor. Don't wash it. Go to bed like that. That's the safest way."

"This is just such a multitasker. I basically keep this in my bag or in my backpack and I really don't take it out, really restock it if it's expired or when I run out because I essentially use this as a moisturizer, as a hand cream, as a lip protectant, multiple things. So I almost always carry this with me when I travel. I love this, it's great to use all around, a great multitasker. [...] I can use this multi-purpose as I mentioned, I can slug with this if I need to or if I want to."

"Aquaphor has lanolin, and some people develop an allergy to that, so you could be making things worse. Petrolatum is probably the safest, lowest risk of any allergy, so just stick with plain petrolatum."

"This is a product that some people think is their holy grail. But [...] one issue is that people can develop an allergy to the lanoline alcohol and other ingredients, so it's not really hypoallergenic."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
