What the gurus are saying

Thiamidol at effective concentrations earns consistent praise for reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation, with clinical data showing it matches prescription hydroquinone in strength without toxicity risks. However, the serum's heavy fragrance divides reviewers sharply: some tolerate it well, but multiple gurus find it so strong it triggers headaches and irritation, making long-term use difficult. Those with sensitive skin or fragrance sensitivity may want to patch-test first or request a fragrance-free alternative, though the active ingredient itself works best when applied twice daily to be effective.

"If you kind of disrupt that, it prevents that pigment from forming. It does also have some really promising results when it comes to eradicating pigment a little bit quicker and helping to disperse the pigment we already have a little bit more evenly. [...] Some of these studies show that it's actually the most effective of the commercially available [...] over-the-counter products. The [...] anti-pigment dual serum is probably the best in terms of concentration."

"I hope Eucerin can take out the fragrance or just tone it down. A fragrance-free option would be great [...] because we never want to cause a rash that leads to dark spots and worsening hyperpigmentation. So I'd [...] have to cut this fragrance product, not thamol as a molecule or as an ingredient. That said, I've had patients truly happy with this to use on their breaks from hydroquinone because you can't use hydroquinone all the time."

How to ACTUALLY Fix Dark Spots (Dermatologist No-BS Guide)
"The downside to it is one, you have to use it frequently. The studies show you get max benefit by using it four times a day, which is a lot. You got to use it in the serums twice a day, sunscreen, and also in the night cream. There's ways to apply it four times a day but it is a lot. And also it's heavily fragrance, and I worry about my patients who are sensitive to fragrance. I am not sensitive to it, so I've used the Radiant Tone line without any issues, but it is quite strong."
How to Layer Your Skincare Products in an Anti-Aging Skincare Routine
"I've looked at the research, the data, and it actually looks really good. I can't imagine it being as powerful as prescription hydroquinone, which is the ultimate lightning cream for dark spots. And that has to be prescribed and has to be under the supervision of a doctor with that particular ingredient. And I talked to doctors in Europe and also South America. They have enjoyed prescribing or recommending Thiamidol to their patients in the last few years since it's been available."
Morning vs Night Skincare: What Matters for Anti-Aging?
"There are things that you would do twice a day like say the new thiamidol based product by Eucerin, their new serum with thiamidol, a new ingredient they found that helps block tyrosinase and works on dark spots that actually used two to four times a day and I don't know how people can apply something four times a day. If you do that twice a day in your routine it looks like you have to do it pretty frequently for it to work. So just a heads up on that."
Cut or Keep: The Secrets to Fixing Your Dark Spots

"Thiamidol is a newer depigmenting ingredient with solid published data. It works as a highly selective tyrosinase inhibitor. In Eucerin's Radiant Tone collection, this contains it at effective concentrations and it's very accessible and affordable."
~Yay
"But licorice itself does have some brightening properties. I've used it with my retinol at night as well as my vitamin C in the morning and I have not gotten any irritation. When I struggle with hyperpigmentation, I probably just use the serum because it's got the most concentrated active. I have recommended it to many of my patients in clinic that are wanting a skin brightening product without a prescription."
~Yay
"It has glycerin and hyaluronic acid, so all in all it's a really nice serum which helps in reducing dark spots. Thiamidol is really effective, and I feel that this is expensive, but if you are thinking of investing in something to improve your skin tone overall and improve skin quality, then I feel this serum is worth the price. You just have to use a very small quantity, just one pump on the affected area. I prefer to use it in the morning time [...] on the melasma patches."
~Yay
"It was tested against hydroquinone and actually shown in a clinical trial to be as effective as four percent hydroquinone, without the risk of toxicity to the melanocytes or the risk of ochronosis. You use the serum twice a day, the sunscreen in the morning, and the moisturizer at night, and you'll see a significant reduction in pigment. There are some amazing before and afters I've seen on Reddit in the skincare addiction subreddit."
~Nay
"They've got alcohol plus their patented Tyro inhibitor and that's how they're selling it by selling it as has a patented ingredient but actually it's not going to be any more effective than the other tyro inhibitors we have over the counter and they've only using one of them. I mean I'm happy for you to try it but actually it is probably going to lead to drying of the skin and premature aging so I personally wouldn't."

"Fragrance can commonly trigger stinging and burning, and personally I just did not care for the strong fragrance in Eucerin's facial care products like this dual pigment thiamidol serum. I could not use them long term, it got on my nerves."

Why Is Eucerin Gatekeeping Thiamidol Anti-Pigment Serum?
"When I tell you the fragrance was bad to the point where it was too head it really gave me a bad headache and I was like no, you know, I'm not going to [...] continue with these. There's no way I'm going to recommend them."

"The fragrance was really off-putting and, you know, a reason for me not to stick with the dual serum."
*NEW* Eucerin Radiant Tone With Thiamidol For Dark Spots
"It's in the dual serum, it's in the SPF 30 day cream and it's in the night cream and it lingers. It's very strong, it's very perfumey, it's very flowery. So keep that in mind. And I really hate that they did that because fragrance can be irritating. I find it when it's this strong I find it gives me a headache and I know that's the case for a lot of people. And it is a relatively common allergen, especially in skincare products."
Shopping For Skincare At The Drugstore
"I've been really consistent with it but I recently paused it because I'm honestly kind of done with it. The fragrance is so annoying. I've already reviewed it, I've used it, I believe in the ingredient for hyperpigmentation, I'm probably down to about the dual serum label of product so that's a lot. I've been using it now for a while but recently I've started using something else."

Hexylresorcinol for Hyperpigmentation: Does it Work?
"When it comes to thamol, the Eucerin Radiant Tone line is a great option. Unfortunately, it does have a strong fragrance, and the fragrance was really off-putting, which is a reason for me not to stick with the dual serum."

"This product, the Eucerin Radiant Tone Dual Serum Dark Spot Corrector, has thamaol. Why do I not use this? I don't use it because it has a very strong off-putting fragrance. I know a lot of you guys use thamaol and you don't have any issue with fragrance in this. So I wanted to point out that it is on sale."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
