What the gurus are saying

This balm stands out for breaking down even stubborn waterproof makeup and sunscreen in a single step, something most cleansing balms can't claim. Gurus praise how efficiently it works (a little goes a long way) and how gentle it is, even around the eyes. The fragrance (described as green marshmallow or lime popsicle) is a selling point for many, though those sensitive to scents or essential oils may want to patch-test first or consider the fragrance-free version.

"It's a nice cleansing balm. It thins out pretty quickly, so you don't need to use a ton. It smooths over really easily and it does a great job removing sunscreen and makeup without leaving any residue. I can actually get away with just using this removing my makeup and then rinsing and just not even using a second step cleanser, which makes it unique in that way. So, it's really wonderful. [...] I'm going to recommend the fragrance-free version because there's just a lesser chance of irritation."

"I have done double cleansing. There's a brand called Pharmacy and they have a cleansing balm that's very nice, though it does have fragrance."

"Pharmacy is pretty pretty good in terms of [...] removing my waterproof makeup."

"If you want an experience, one of my favorite ones of all time is the Farmacy Green one. It smells like those little green marshmallows that are just so dang delicious. [...] Those are probably in my top three cleansing balms, something I use a ton of and need more of at any given point."

"It comes with a little scooper, it's green, it's fragranced but I find it to be one of the most effective makeup removers available on the market after trying hundreds. The smell is like a bag of green small marshmallows, and experientially this is my favorite part. I would argue that if you were going to have fragrance in any part of your skincare routine, cleansing balm would be the place to have it because you almost invariably follow it with another cleanser."

"Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm is [...] a really elegant cleansing balm where a little bit goes a long way. It's gentle yet at the same time very effective at removing all the makeup, sunscreen, and layers with sunscreen which I tend to put on throughout the day, [...] and I tend to wear a lot more water resistant makeup which tends to be harder to get rid of with just a traditional cleanser."
    ✓Yay
"I love the Farmacy Green Clean. I really do. I've been using it for so many years and it's an excellent product to remove stubborn waterproof mascara, lip stains, sunscreens that are really difficult to remove at the end of the day, especially water resistant formulations. This cleansing balm removes everything with that one application. It's very gentle, it never burns my eyes when it accidentally gets in there, and it does the job really well and just melts everything off so nicely."
    ✓Yay
"It has a very light scent and only three essential oils compared to Elemis which had nine. [...] It is rooted in sunflower and ginger root oil and it contains papain, which is a papaya extract enzyme that allows for very gentle exfoliation. [...] The original one is definitely oilier than their clean one, and it is [...] the better one of the two because [...] oils are going to break down makeup better than creams."
    ✓Yay
"I really love that cleansing balm because I think it's highly effective at breaking down makeup and eye makeup in particular. It smells like a lime popsicle, so for people who don't like that like candy lime candy type smell you might not love this. There's also botanicals in here so if you have really sensitive skin or you can't tolerate certain fragrances or essential oils that might not be the first cleansing step for you, but for me it has very much agreed with my skin."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.
