What the gurus are saying

The combination of lactic acid and urea targets the rough bumps of keratosis pilaris while oatmeal and ceramides soothe and support the skin barrier, making it well-suited to the dry skin that often comes with the condition. Dermatologists note the formula balances chemical exfoliation with hydration and barrier care, so those with keratosis pilaris and dry skin may find it addresses both the texture and the underlying dryness without over-stripping.

"First Aid Beauty's KP Smoothing Body Lotion has 10% AHA, predominantly lactic acid, but it also contains urea, which is another great ingredient and can help improve clogged pores and keratosis pilaris as well. In addition, it also has soothing oats, so it's more nourishing and soothing. I think it's really great for those with more dry skin that are struggling from keratosis pilaris."

"Alpha hydroxy acids are good for rough and bumpy skin, so lactic acid is good for keratosis pilaris, and urea. [...] This is pretty good overall. It [...] has licorice root and ceramides and colloidal oatmeal, so it really is formulated with the needs of KP in mind. It has very hydrating ingredients and very good barrier supporting ingredients, underscoring the fact that KP is a dry skin condition, but then the acid is to address the dry rough bumps."

"But objectively this product is pretty good. It has lactic acid, which can soften dry, rough, bumpy skin like from keratosis pilaris, and urea, which can also soften and exfoliate that rough bumpy texture. It has licorice root, which is anti-inflammatory and can help calm redness, [...] colloidal oatmeal, which is very hydrating and a skin protectant, [...] ceramide [...] for the moisture barrier, and allantoin, which is also very moisturizing."

"This has 10 percent alpha hydroxy acids, which is partly lactic acid, if not all lactic acid. It's hard to tell exactly from just looking at the label. It also has urea at an unknown concentration and one form of ceramide only. Compared to the AmLactin option, I give the nod to AmLactin, which has a higher percentage of lactic acid and more ceramides. The First Aid Beauty one does contain other skin-soothing additives, which could be good or bad depending on your own skin tolerability."

"First Aid Beauty has a KP lotion that has lactic acid in it, [...] which has [...] ingredients that both moisturize and exfoliate at the same time. If you're noticing that you're getting thickened skin on the legs, then it would be worthwhile considering using a moisturizer that exfoliates at the same time."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
