What the gurus are saying

This cream earns strong praise for treating keratosis pilaris and softening rough bumpy skin, especially on elbows, knees, hands and feet. However, it's considered too strong for facial use, and it does contain citrus and fruit extracts that may cause irritation for those with sensitive skin, so a patch test first is worth considering.

"Gold Bond's Rough and Bumpy Moisturizing Cream in that gold jar are so nice. I love that one a lot. That one really can soften up your arms. Don't go scrubbing and using a scrubber or brush or those harsh cloths to wipe away your KP. Just trust your moisturizers with those chemical exfoliants to help soften those bumps instead."

"Gold Bond's amazing for the body and for really thick skin on the elbows, the knees, the hands and feet, especially when it has urea in it or PHAs, AHAs, BHAs. The Rough and Bumpy Gold Bond is really good, but it's a little too strong for the face. From a lot of my patients with sensitive skin, it could cause too much of an effect in exfoliating and lead to irritant contact dermatitis."

"If you have keratosis pilaris or those bumps on the back of the arms on your thighs you can totally use a moisturizing cream with some gentle exfoliants. This one by Gold Bond is really nice, it's one of my favorites."

"This rough and bumpy skin cream from Gold Bond has gluconolactone and urea. Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid that is very hydrating. It also has urea, which is another name for hydroxy Apple urea, [...] and it has petrolatum, one of my favorite ingredients for reducing water loss and aiding in barrier recovery. Now this does have citrus extract and fruit extracts, which potentially could be irritating."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.
