"This one's got 0.1% retinol. It's got grape seed oil, bakuchiol, also known as phyto retinol, and vitamin E. These are all fragrance-free options, so they're always very nice. I love Good Molecules. I love that they're still an affordable brand. And I love that this is still eight bucks for now, and maybe get on sale. This stuff's really nice. Decent packaging, no smell, decent ingredient list, all that good stuff."

"Their Gentle Retinol Cream is eight bucks, it's a deal. So in this one we've got .1% retinol, we've got bakuchiol, there's lanolin and grape seed oil which makes it super hydrating. I believe this is one I repurchased. This one also comes in the aluminum tube which is most professional. [...] I have a love-hate relationship with this one. I've been trying to finish this one up, but every time I open this, [...] too much comes out and it makes a mess, and it's expensive so it feels like a waste."

"The Good Molecules Gentle Retinol is probably [...] the cheapest of all the products on this list and is stunning. It is so gentle. If you've started a retinoid in the past and thought no, my skin can't handle it, and you've kind of written them off, actually take a second look and go for this Good Molecules product. Really gentle, beautifully lightweight, has a touch of hydration too, so it's great for dryer or combination dry skin types. [...] It's a low dose, so a great place to start."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
