What the gurus are saying

This green corrector earns consistent praise for delivering visible redness correction, though it's heavier and more pigmented than some rivals so may feel thick on sensitive skin. Dermatologists note it outperforms lighter formulas at actually neutralizing color, and one has swapped it in as her everyday base instead of makeup on work days.

"Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm is another really popular one that's actually really quite affordable. [...] This is their redness correct color correcting green serum. This is a heavier color correction, much heavier than the La Roche-Posay one, so it can be a little heavy for some people, but I think it's going to do a better job correcting color than the La Roche-Posay one."

"This formulation is really hydrating on the skin [...] and it's a very simple formulation that I think would work for a lot of skin tones. It has methanol in it to soothe the skin and it has some peptides in it to help your skin barrier. [...] Since I found this product and seen how good it works on my skin, it is what I'm exclusively wearing instead of makeup on work days [...] because it does just enough to correct all my redness and give me an even skin tone."

"It's by Hero, it's the Rescue Balm. It is a color correcting green cream that visibly evens the skin tone with the pigments in this product. I am very redness prone, that is part of what I deal with as my aging skin, so green corrects red. This is what I've been using so much during the day instead of makeup. It's a very subtle green, and then when you rub it in, it covers the redness. It is a very new to me product, it's actually a viral product, and for a good reason it works so well."

"Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm Plus Red Correct, now I love this stuff. They have two versions from Hero: the Rescue Balm and then the Plus Red Correct. They are a post-blemish cream, basically meant to help heal and mend up your skin after a pimple has occurred, and it works, it absolutely works. I do get pimples that pop, I rub a little bit of this on it and [...] that peely, broken skin just starts to smooth over and heal up a lot faster."

"The Rescue Balm, the color correcting one, is something you could use if you have post acne redness, as a spot moisturizer to reduce irritation and help camouflage the redness, similar to their Post Blemish Recovery Cream. This is good, it's got beta glucan and peptides, it helps hydrate the healing skin and reduce irritation and friction. These are both pretty good."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.
