What the gurus are saying

This serum splits the experts. One dermatologist approves it outright, while another praises its niacinamide and alpha arbutin for evening skin tone and creating glow, but warns that the kakadu plum form of vitamin C breaks down too quickly to work effectively on skin. That instability means the brightening you see likely comes from the other actives, not the vitamin C, so those with dark spots may want to look for a product with a more stable vitamin C form if that ingredient matters to them.

"The effective ingredients in this formula are niacinamide and alpha arbutin, which I both love. The form of vitamin C that they market in here is kakadu plum. The problem with this is that it tends to break down before it's even hit the skin, it's not the most effective form of vitamin C, and it's actually [...] not the most stable form of vitamin C, so it's not one that I would recommend. [...] So this product I give about 5.5 out of 10."

"This is a Dr V approved product. If you have more intense hyperpigmentation from say acne or melasma or you have fine lines that are starting to develop which tend to happen from your mid 20s onwards then this is probably a stronger product for you. [...] It comes out very yellow on the skin and it blends quite easily into the skin and it's fragrance free of course and niacinamide safe which is really important for skin of color. This is however an expensive product and it's not for everyone."

"This serum helps in lighting dark spots, makes the skin tone appear more even and more glowy. [...] It has a watery texture, it's non-oily, it's slightly tacky and it spreads easily. Take two pumps and apply it on the whole face. You can use it on clean dry face. [...] If you have dry irritated skin, avoid this. If you are somebody looking for a light serum to use in the morning before your moisturizer and sunscreen then you can go ahead and use this."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.
