What the gurus are saying

This cream earns consistent praise for its lightweight gel texture that hydrates without feeling heavy or greasy, making it work seamlessly under sunscreen and makeup even in warm weather or on oily skin. Gurus highlight the licorice root extract as the standout ingredient for calming redness, fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and soothing sensitivity. One note: the formula does contain fragrance, which those with fragrance sensitivity may want to patch test first before committing.

"The I'm From Licorice Calming Cream is 19 bucks. This one's got licorice root, panthenol, it's got althea, rose extract, and vitamin E. It's [...] more of a cream gel texture to it, but really nice product. No scent. [...] This one's going to be geared towards normal to dry skin types and non acne prone skin types."

I'm from Licorice Calming Cream Review, How to Use, Dupes & Alternatives
"A little bit of it goes a long way. It's got a really nice texture, it works well over vitamin C serums and it works well underneath sunscreen. No pilling. [...] It's not terribly thick so when you end up applying makeup or anything over it, it doesn't feel like some moisturizers can feel too thick, especially when you add sunscreen onto it and that almost feels like you're wearing a mask. I don't have that at all with this one. [...] Sets in really nicely, doesn't feel greasy."
New Moisturizers for Fall feat. Neutrogena, I'm From, Bliss and Summer Fridays - Fragrance Free!
"It has licorice root, several types, panthenol which is a great skin soothing ingredient, then we've got Althea rose flower which is another good antioxidant and then ceramides. It's a really nice lightweight moisturizer. I'd say it's geared towards normal oily skin or my skin. So far on some humid days I really liked it and it worked well. It soaks in pretty quickly and sets to a natural finish, slightly slightly shiny finish."

"The I'm From Licorice Calming Cream is 22 bucks at Yes Style. We've got licorice, we've got panthenol, we've got ceramides in here. This one's got a nice lightweight texture to it, so I would say this one will work well for most skin types because it's got kind of that gel lotion texture to it. Soaks in nicely, it works well under sunscreen and makeup, no issues with peeling anything like that. It's a great option for most skin types."

"I like the I'm From Licorice Calming Cream, [...] I think it's a nice formula, it is kind of light. I have a dry skin type and this just doesn't work as a moisturizer on its own for me, especially now going into the winter months, so I've kind of been plowing through it. I like licorice, it's an excellent ingredient for helping to brighten your skin, and I think most people will like it, it blends out really fast and nicely, [...] but it's just not moisturizing enough for my skin type."

"I'm FROM is just a great Korean skincare brand that just feels so luxurious, and their formulas are really out of this world. This moisturizer is no different, not only is it going to give your skin a splash of hydration, but it also has licorice root extract which is great for fading hyperpigmentation and dark spots, balancing the tone of your skin, helping with dark circles, alongside other incredible ingredients that are great for reducing irritation and sensitivity."

"The hyaluronic acid and some of the other ingredients make it feel moisturized but it's not too heavy. It's a very nice lightweight experience and my skin still looks relatively mattified, which not many products can do. [...] The I'm From Licorice Calming Cream is a super nice lightweight gel cream. [...] It feels really good on the skin and was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. That said, it does have fragrance, which I did not want, so that's a downside."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Source: DermNet

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
