What the gurus are saying

Experts split on whether this cleanser hydrates or dries the skin. Some find it leaves skin feeling stingy and dry, while others praise its lightweight formula with hydrating ingredients like sodium hyaluronate and niacinamide that don't strip the skin barrier. Those with reactive skin may want to patch-test first given the mixed takes.

"This cleanser is really drying on my skin so I'm going to go rinse it off. My skin feels a little stingy and sensitive."

Skincare I'd Actually Re-Purchase! EMPTIES!
"I absolutely love this. I was gifted this but I have a backup already and I will purchase this with my own money because it's just a perfect cleanser. Every cleanser nowadays its goal is to not leave your skin feeling stripped, and I think if a cleanser is launched nowadays that does that it's kind of unacceptable. But overall it's just a nice refreshing cleanser for me and it's weird for me to say about a cleanser but I look forward to using it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
