What the gurus are saying

It's basically a big, oily lip balm, and the volume the marketing promises isn't coming. Where it works: dabbed around the eyes, nose and lips, or at night as a lighter stand-in for slugging, leaving dry patches smoother and glowier. Skip it over makeup, which it can ruin, and some gurus call it unnecessary unless you already love a slugged finish.

"I'll say it, the multi balm is just an oil bomb, it's like a humongous lip balm. It's more moisturizing and more oily than Kahi's, and it doesn't give you volume like the social media promises, that's not going to happen. Never put it on after makeup, because it'll ruin everything."
~Yay
"You can use it around your eyes, [...] all over your lips, or wherever you tend to get dry throughout the day, even at night as a lighter alternative to slugging. Because it's a soft emollient it can reduce the appearance of dehydration lines and make the skin look smoother and glowier. [...] The marketing around it is ridiculous, but all the lying doesn't make the product itself bad, if anything the over the top marketing does the brand a disservice."

"This is a really nice product to use. Especially if you are like applying serum you want to apply this around your lip area. You want to apply this around your nose area. But honestly if you are into slugging if you are like having a nice oil on your face then you can opt in for something like this otherwise I don't think this is necessary"

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
