What the gurus are saying

Experts split sharply on application. Some found it spreading beautifully with elegant, sophisticated pigments that even skin tone without feeling heavy or makeup-y, and drying to a lovely, non-oily finish. Others experienced it applying streaky with a chalky appearance settling into creases, especially concerning on deeper skin tones. At $38, the price is hard to justify for such a high-maintenance formula.

"Putting this on at an eighth of a teaspoon, I really thought it looked great. There weren't any problems with rubbing it in anywhere. It covered my entire face. And it feels really, really nice. It doesn't feel heavy. It doesn't feel greasy. The pigments don't look heavy. It doesn't look like a mask of makeup, and it looks still very sheer, but yet it evens out my skin tone, covers up my redness, makes my skin look better than it is, and I like the finish on it as well. It's not super shiny."

"And I think if you have a deeper skin tone and you go for their deeper shades, I think you're gonna run into that same issue where it looks more like chalky paint. [...] For $38, I think that's pretty steep for this amount of headache. This is a high maintenance sunscreen to work with [...] because it just looks bad. I'm getting spoiled by chemical sunscreens and I do like many mineral sunscreens, but this I don't have the patience for and neither do most people. So, I say it's a pass."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
