What the gurus are saying

This retinoid earns approval for working well on oilier and combination skin. The formula suits those managing acne without the harshness of stronger retinoids, and one dermatologist ranks it among her top picks for the category. Not many gurus have weighed in yet, so there is not much to go on so far.

"This is 2% Granactive Retinoid. It's an airless pump. It's a new form of vitamin A, it's actually good for more sensitive skin. Doesn't have as much data behind it as retinol, of course retinol has been around for a lot longer, but it is one that I would recommend probably over the other two because of the packaging. I think they did a really good job with this product. This one is Dr V approved."

"This is good for sensitive skin, for mild breakouts, for fine lines, so early anti-aging. I would recommend this one. This is not going to be for your more severe acne, but for mild acne that you get maybe once a month, I'm happy for you to use this. And also if you are starting to get fine lines and you don't know which vitamin A to go for, so far this one is my favorite."

"The Minimalist Granactive Retinoid 2% will suit those with oilier combination skin. After the retinol you'll apply a layer of moisturizer."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
