What the gurus are saying

The 8% ascorbic acid can backfire when used in sunlight, triggering melanocytes and causing rapid darkening rather than the intended brightening. Some experts genuinely like this product for dark lips and appreciate its affordable price and gentle formula compared to other brightening options, while others consider it too harsh to recommend. The bitter taste is notable; best used only at night.

"This is very, very gentle, hydrating, and might help with its intended goal. So I actually like it a lot for what it is. It tastes pretty weird, so if you can tolerate that, that's up to you. It is flavor-free and fragrance-free, so that's to be anticipated, but it does have a little bit of a weird taste."

"You certainly should not be wearing this during the day and then going out into the sun. This is a big mistake. You will see immediate brightening and then you're going to see rapid darkening of the lips because you're triggering your melanocytes. Big, big problem. You should instead only be wearing SPF 50 when you go out on your lips. Yeah, this is a mistake. Big mistake. Don't buy. Avoid."

"L ascorbic acid in a serum form has not suited me every time I've tried to use a vitamin C serum in the pure form which is ascorbic acid, it darkens, it becomes it oxidizes on my face, it's terrible, but this form of L-ascorbic acid is chef's kiss. This product was like 200, 300 rupees, very very affordable."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
