What the gurus are saying

Zero white cast and a fragrance-free formula win strong praise from several gurus who loved its affordability and how smoothly it blends into skin. However, the presence of octinoxate (a chemical UV filter that can enter the bloodstream) creates a split in expert opinion. Anyone concerned about chemical filters or who prefers mineral sunscreen options may want to look elsewhere.

"But they did the same mistake as KY did with her sunscreen to put octinoxate in this, which is a chemical filter and it's one that I don't like because it enters the bloodstream. So for me this is just a hard no. I always say go for mineral sunscreen because that is your zinc oxide, 100% mineral sunscreen, because it doesn't enter the bloodstream, right? It sits on the skin. It is used during pregnancy for this reason. It doesn't enter breast milk, it doesn't go into your urine."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
