What the gurus are saying

The tried-and-true vitamin C, E and ferulic acid formula earns praise for its potency and affordability, though dermatologists caution about how much vitamin C actually reaches your skin. Gurus highlight that the 16% concentration works for sensitive skin types too. The main caveat: the formula also contains gluconolactone, which means you'll want to patch-test first and save it for evening use a few times a week rather than daily, since that combination can be drying.

"However, the directions are wrong on this product. The directions say you can use it AM and PM. That's a mistake. Ferulic acid is an acid and it exfoliates the skin. So you certainly do not want to be doing this morning and night. This is a PM product because the ferulic acid only very lightly penetrates easily into the skin. It's got the classic kind of chemical smell, you know, it's because it's a fragrance-free brand and I love it. I would say this is definitely a derm-approved product."

"I really like the formula, but I don't like the packaging. Vitamin C, of course, is your antioxidant, and so is ferulic acid. I actually really like the formula, but I just don't like the packaging. This is definitely a dupe-approved product, but please get this reformulated."

"This is a vitamin C, E, ferulic, and that's a formula you should all know because that is the staple, tried and true formulation for vitamin C for dark spots and tone, an amazing antioxidant. So this has ethyl ascorbic acid as the form of vitamin C. Ethyl ascorbic acid makes it more stable, adds more skin neutral pH, has improved absorption, and it still has clinical benefits. It's more studied than a lot of the other vitamin C alternative derivatives."

"This one's really affordable. The Minimalist 16% Vitamin C serum has ethylascorbic acid, vitamin E, and ferulic acid. It's a really wonderful, well-packaged product and it's super affordable. It's sold and shipped by Minimalist on Amazon or you can check out their website either way. It works, so very nice product."

"Minimalist has 16% Vitamin C serum which is ideal for every skin type, sensitive skin can also tolerate it, and it has Vitamin E plus Ferulic Acid"

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
