What the gurus are saying

Fermented ingredients break down into smaller molecules that gurus say deliver hydration and may offer brightening benefits, though experts split sharply on safety. Those with dry skin find it nourishing and fast-absorbing; those with oily skin may want to reserve it for nighttime or drier seasons. The key caveat: one dermatologist flags bergamot and lavender essential oils as fragrant ingredients that can strip water from skin, which she notes is particularly concerning for skin of color, which tends to be drier and have fewer ceramides already.

"Not many people know about the Mixsoon Bean Cream. It's the same bean ingredient, but definitely I recommend it for the more dry mature skin girlies or at the winter time because the texture feels like not that heavy. It's more like a very softer, like a whipped cream, but the hydration level is pretty high. So definitely I recommend it for my mom, dry mature skin, too."

"It comes in a jar, it is not too heavy, it feels like something between a lotion and a cream, and if you apply a little more it also works well for dry skin. It feels like more of an all rounder. It has a very good hydration level and works well even for very sensitive, [...] very dry skin. [...] Overall, this got the number one spot out of all sixteen moisturizers I tested."

"This is my Holy Grail. This is my second jar, which means a lot because I have so many different products, I am living in cosmetic candy land so it is really hard to finish one. My sister has atopic inflammation, so sensitive, but she used it with no problem."

"Mixsoon's Bean Cream is pretty good, I use it in my daily routine. Their essence is also very popular."

"And when that happens it removes water with it. And skin of color we have less water in our skin. We have less ceramides in our skin. Our skin is drier and duller. It's the opposite of what we should be doing. This is the same reason I do not want you wearing denatured alcohol in your skincare. On top of that is a skin sensitizer. So please, I know the very expensive, the luxury 100, 200, 300 dollar creams contain those ingredients. They are bad for skin of color. Please avoid."

"This is just a lovely moisturizer that really helps to better hydrate the skin. [...] Texture-wise it's going to be a thicker cream, and the ingredients make it really lovely, not super heavy or greasy. What it contains is lactobacillus fermented soybean extract, [...] as well as fermented barley, which offers a unique different blend of vitamins and minerals and bioactives slightly different from soy, along with fermented pomegranate as well as fermented Korean pear."

"The Mixsoon Bean Cream is a personal favorite of mine. [...] Whenever I'm doing a K-beauty shop, I will always pop this one in the basket just to have, because I know I could always rely on it and fall back on it. It has Fermented Soybean, which is great for leveling out that oil water balance in your skin and helping to retain hydration and moisture, along with [...] Fermented Pomegranate, Barley, Korean Pear."

"This is fantastic if you're super dry. I would say that this probably isn't going to stay in my routine because while it's really good, it's just too hydrating for me. It is like a thick basically like a ceramide Bean Cream with minimal ingredients built on K Beauty staples. It has capric triglyceride, metofoam, turmeric for brightening and the main ingredients do make this like a very hydrating moisturizer."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
