What the gurus are saying

The 2% salicylic acid formulation draws mixed takes. One expert appreciates the ingredient's oil-absorbing lipophilic properties but notes it works better in a cleanser and wishes for supporting actives to strengthen the formula, making it good but not standout. However, reports of stinging when applied across the face suggest spot treatment may work best used sparingly and patch-tested first.

"She's putting this rumored to be Spot Treatment all over her face right and during this video there's no audio but she says that she started to feel a stinging sensation but she decided to keep the product on as like a mask or something"

"2% salicylic acid is definitely an option as a spot treatment. [...] Salicylic, [...] I like this ingredient more in your cleanser. Not that I don't like it as a spot treatment, there are a lot of great 2% spot salicylic acids, but I like the vehicle though. The thing it brings to the table is it's very lipophilic. It absorbs into the oil, it helps remove oil. At lower concentrations, it's like modestly exfoliating."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
