What the gurus are saying

This serum earns praise for its blend of vitamin C, hexylresorcinol, and niacinamide, with one formulation expert calling it perfect. However, those using it should know that it can increase sun sensitivity, so morning application may need caution or an extra layer of sunscreen. If you're already managing morning routines carefully, patch-testing first is worth doing.

"I tried my custom serum from Murad containing hexylresorcinol and vitamin C and niacinamide and it's perfect."
✓Mixed
"This Vitamin C Serum has vitamin C but it also has two forms of alpha hydroxy acid so it combines vitamin C with glycolic acid and lactic acid. [...] Just be careful if you're going to be using that one, be careful about using it in the morning because it does make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Even if you're using it in the evening, you still want to be really careful about sun protection every single morning if you decide to use that product."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Source: DermNet

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.
