What the gurus are saying

The 7% ectoin formula delivers sustained hydration from morning through night while noticeably calming skin and strengthening the barrier. It's especially valued by those with sensitive or reactive skin seeking to reduce redness without irritation. The trade-off is price and consumption rate: at $40-$44, it empties quickly, and other ectoin options cost less, though gurus prize this product's notably emollient texture.

"My favorite ectoin product right now is the Paula's Choice 7% Ectoin Milky Serum Booster. It has 7% ectoin, and sometimes I just mix in a drop or two with a serum or moisturizer. It helps hydrate skin, calm it down, and helps with texture a little bit as well. It's fragrance free. This is a newer one and I really am enjoying it."

"It's also great for hydrating, soothing, and barrier repairing. So it makes a great daytime and evening skin product. And then it also contains sodium hyaluronate, squalene and vitamin E, fragrance-free, all that good stuff. [...] It's 44 bucks, so it's a little bit expensive for ectoin. I mean, there's a lot of basic ectoin serums out there. I think the Inky List has an ectoin serum, I want to say Good Molecules. You don't have to spend 44 bucks, but it looks like it has a nice light texture."

"It is so calming, soothing, and that tone is going to do wonders for your skin barrier. This really is a great product for people that are wanting to almost go back to basics. You might have overdone it with your actives, you want to strip it back, go for this. Maybe you've got very reactive skin and you just want to use something that you know is going to help with that and not make it worse. Go for this. It's wonderful. It comes in at around £40 here in the UK. I think it's about $45."

"This without a doubt is the best product Paula's Choice in my opinion has put out in the past, I don't know, 3 or 4 years. Been a while since they've had a winner in my opinion. And this is good stuff. It's very emollient. It's hydrating. It gives the skin this nice plump, glowy, fresh look. It also has hyaluronic acid, jojoba seed oil, glycerin, which is going to be very hydrating, and squalane, a lightweight emollient."

Why Ectoin Might Be the Barrier-Repair Ingredient Your Skin Needs
"It feels very soothing going on the skin. Spreads easily. It really does leave the skin immediately feeling quenched, moisturized, and importantly that hydration is sustained throughout the entire day and throughout the entire night. I've used this many nights as my only moisturizer along with, of course, my tretinoin. And it was more than adequate as a facial moisturizer. It's actually on the richer side. It's a thin fluid that spreads easily on the skin, but it's very emollient rich."
