What the gurus are saying

The weak forms of vitamin C in this serum matter less than you might think, because the rest of the antioxidant lineup (glutathione, superoxide dismutase, ferulic acid) is strong enough to carry the load. Experts praise the vitamin A and C pairing, but here's the catch: since antioxidants break down in oxygen, the serum comes in a pipette bottle, which means you cannot be certain how potent it still is when you use it. For maximum effect, gurus suggest only buying antioxidant serums in airless pump bottles.

"Paula's Choice has an interesting one. It's a good one. It's their antioxidant serum, or something like that. [...] It has a lot of those supporting antioxidants in there. I think it has glutathione, it has superoxide dismutase, it has ferulic acid. Interestingly, the forms of vitamin C in it are very low for me. It has tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, whatever, whatever vitamin C, and then magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, which is absolute trash when it comes to vitamin C's."

"This is a really, really nice product. Paula's Choice Resist Antioxidant Concentrated Serum has multiple different antioxidants in it, including vitamin C, so it could be an antioxidant and vitamin C serum all in one. It's [...] slightly higher on the price point, but you're getting more in that formulation, so I don't think that's a bad thing. This is still definitely value for money. They do two sizes: a 5 ml travel size and a 30 ml."

"Let me tell you what's in the Paula's Choice here. We've got tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which is a fat-soluble vitamin C, plus peptides and ceramides, so they've packed more goodies into this product. It's fragrance free. It's £32 for 30 ml, and this is just the power of being viral."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.
