What the gurus are saying

This spray reaches body acne on your back and chest, and sprays even upside down for those hard-to-reach spots. Salicylic acid and licorice extract address both active breakouts and the redness left behind, while gurus praise it as silky, not sticky, affordable, and worth repurposing products from your face routine if they didn't work there.

"From Paula's Choice this is the acne body spray if you do get acne and ingrown or if you have pseudofolliculitis on your butt like I did this summer this can be fantastic and you can use what's already in your cabinet or something that didn't work for your face and just put it on your legs or on your butt."

"I do love this one from Paula's Choice. It is affordable, it is silky on the skin, it doesn't leave me overly sticky the way some other body acne sprays do. This also has licorice extract, so similar to the ingrown hair tonic, this has an ingredient that prevents the hyperpigmentation. So if your pimples are red and irritated, it helps to treat existing acne, prevent new acne from forming, and then it helps with the redness."

"Paula's Choice has a Clear Acne Body Spray with maximum strength 2% salicylic acid in it. It also has allantoin in it which is soothing to the skin and licorice root extract in it that can help fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne spots. Overall this one by Paula's Choice is a very simple formulation so I really like this option."

"A very similar product is the Clear Acne Body Spray, which is just pretty much the same thing but in a spray form. [...] This is really good for getting my back. The spray sprays even when you put it upside down, which is really handy."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

    Source: DermNet

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
