What the gurus are saying

This cream-based BHA exfoliant applies more easily to the body than liquid versions and won't leave you feeling sticky after use. Gurus found it softens skin and tackles acne and keratosis pilaris (the red bumpy texture many people get on their arms and legs), with the added bonus that you get twice the product for the same price as comparable liquid exfoliants. It has no fragrance, so those with sensitive skin may find that gentler than scented alternatives.

"Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA, which is 32 bucks, is a nice lightweight lotion. It's great for acne prone skin and also great for those with KP, which is a skin condition where you get like red bumpy skin and it just needs a little bit of exfoliant. [...] A lot of people get it on the back of their arms or sometimes on their legs. [...] It has no scent to it, and it softens skin up."
    ✓Yay
"I've also started using the Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA. BHA is salicylic acid, it's a chemical exfoliant. I found that this is a bit less sticky and it's easier to apply because it's a cream. [...] The product that is formulated for your body is easier to apply to your body. [...] If you don't have a whole bunch of liquid exfoliant lying around, then you might want to try this one because they are the same price but this one is twice the size."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

    Source: DermNet

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Source: DermNet

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
