What the gurus are saying

Centella and panthenol make this toner effective for calming redness and irritation, and its 5.5 pH matches skin naturally. However, it contains witch hazel distilled with alcohol and citrus oil, which some experts caution may irritate sensitive skin.

"These are all fantastic ingredients, great for skin of color. The negatives, however: they added witch hazel, which is often distilled in alcohol. Not all the time, but often. When you do that, you're incorporating alcohol into your skincare. Alcohol over a long period of time does damage the skin. It leads to premature aging, which is the exact opposite of what all of us want. So I just avoid any alcohol and witch hazel in your skincare."

"This is definitely a much more calming moisturizer, so if you're struggling with redness or with irritation, this is going to be the best bet for you. They also state the pH—the power of hydrogen, which is 5.5. Our skin usually hangs out at around 5.5, so this is perfect because it matches and mimics what our skin likes to hang out at naturally. [...] Look at how it's like globular—I love this so much."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
