What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen fell far short of its claimed SPF 50+ protection. Independent testing revealed it delivered only SPF 19, and the two UV filters present were each around 2% concentration, which gurus found inadequate for the promised level of defense. The manufacturer's misleading claims left multiple experts who had trusted the product feeling misled.

"Despite being an SPF 50+, Purito actually said it's roughly around SPF 84.5. However, the results from both independent labs showed that the sunscreen only offered a really low and disappointing SPF rating of 19, far below what it had claimed to provide, far below 84. This finding caused a ripple effect throughout the beauty community, raising doubts about the accuracy of SPF claims for other K beauty sunscreens as well."

"When I reviewed that Purito Centella unscented sunscreen, I thought how it has two filters in it, they're both around 2%, and I questioned myself like, how can this be good sunscreen? I was swayed by people that I thought were more intelligent and knowledgeable than myself [...] to think I was wrong, but my gut feeling was right. How can it have two little filters and not a very big amount?"
✕Nay
"I had purchased like eight of the Purito sunscreens because everyone was like, listen, tell a green level unscented SPF 50 PA+ is the best, and then we all found out that because of the manufacturer being a shady shady liar liar pants on fire, this wasn't actually the SPF 50 that they claimed."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
