What the gurus are saying

The texture is what makes this balm stand out, it glides on smoothly and sinks in fast despite its richness, with a matte finish that feels protective without heaviness or stickiness. Gurus praise its blend of soothing actives like panthenol and centella alongside humectants and emollients, and note it works especially well for softening dry flakes and as an overnight layer. One caveat: it costs considerably more than petrolatum-based alternatives like Aquaphor, and some prefer petrolatum's proven barrier repair over this formulation's approach.

"I'm always trying alternatives that don't use products from the oil industry, and this one from Pyunkang Yul, the Calming Moisture Barrier Repair Balm, is nice, it was a very nice product. But it's a lot more expensive than Aquaphor, and I still do feel honestly nothing really quite beats petrolatum."

"This is one of my top repair products. PKY I think is just such an underrated brand. They have so many really solid products. This is a really nice soothing balm. I really love it for when my skin is just grumpy and irritated and can't really handle that much. One of the really cool things about this is from a formulation point of view, when you're putting it on, when it's in the jar, when you're taking it out, it feels almost like a balm in thickness."

"I tried this by chance and I am so glad I did. [...] This is brilliant. It has a lot of the standard soothing barrier support actives like panthenol and centella, and there's also honeysuckle and tea tree extracts, but no niacinamide. It also works really well for softening those stiff dry flakes that I tend to get when I've blown my nose too much. The magic with this product is the texture."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Peptides

Peptides are short protein fragments meant to signal repair. The evidence for them is thinner than for retinoids or vitamin C, and it varies a lot by the specific peptide, so the category is more promising than proven.
