What the gurus are saying

Graininess from shea butter crystallization has plagued this lip tint for over a year now, and the brand's suggested fix of warming it up amounts to more of a workaround than a real solution for a product at this price point. Testers praised its moisturizing power and compact form, though the color payoff is considerably sheer for something marketed as a tint.

"The most viral one is Rhode. I bought this because I already have so many transparent lip balms and I'm done with that, I wanted a little more deep color, so I got it in the salted caramel color, but it still looked like no color on me. I love the packaging though, you can put it in your phone case, so trendy, I love it as a Pinterest girl. I wanted to give it an S but the color payoff was a lot less than I expected, though it's very very moisturizing, so I'm going to give it an A."

"Rhode's peptide lip tints used to be my absolute favorite lip product, [...] but for at least a year or longer now they've been so grainy. [...] On paper and at launch they were iconic, with peptides, babassu and shea butter, [...] but the shea butter [...] has started to crystallize. When the brand finally released a statement they said you just need to warm it up, so people are basically boiling their lip balms."

"They're like super not heavy, they're not sticky. They don't taste like lip products. They're just really not sticky, really non-bothersome. And the colors are just like there's enough colors for all different kind of lip shades. They're just so nice and they keep that moisture and they hold that hydration throughout the day without having to constantly reapply. The standout product from Rhode and probably some of the best lip products I've ever tried."

"The Rhode lip tints are great, they're always sold out so you can never get them, there's something about the new batch as well that we've all discovered, they get a little bit grainy, but I also find that I'm having to apply them more and more, my lips feel like they're drying out quicker."

"I really really like this color on. The next one is called Raspberry Jelly and this is where you start to see a lot more intense color and I think this was my favorite, I absolutely love this color. The last one is Espresso, this is a lot deeper and a heavier brown which I thought was lovely too. So I liked that they had these different colors because I do prefer color in my lip product if I can get it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
