What the gurus are saying

Retinol made for the delicate eyelid skin is what gurus keep returning to, with several finding it softens fine lines and crow's feet without heavy dryness. Expect a light tingle, but several found it gentle enough for sensitive eyes. However, some found it did not brighten dark circles enough, and with no percentage listed, it is hard to tell how strong it is.

"I've actually used an entire tube of this. Honestly, thought it was great. It moisturizes my eyelids. RoC is great in terms of a retinol. Now, I use retinol occasionally around my eyes, the eye creams. I don't use tretinoin around my eyes. It's too irritating there for me. Sometimes I'll dabble in one of these to try them out, see what they're like. They're formulated to be gentle enough around the eyes. I never developed any irritation around the eyes with this. It's a good product."

"They also make an eye cream in this line that is a little bit different as far as the texture. Performs very well. Likewise, you experience that tingling around the eyes, but not excessive dryness and irritation. This is one that always is here."
Prequel Multi-Quench vs Paula’s Choice Ectoin: Best Hydrating Serum?
"When it comes to actual retinol, there's a case to be made for an eye cream because retinol can be irritating to eyelid skin. This is a great retinol eye cream from RoC, the Line Smoothing Eye Cream. Their retinols are really good."
Dr. Jart Masks AND MORE Sam's Club Skincare Finds
"I still think this is a pretty good value. It's $30 for the two, so $15 a piece. It's only half an ounce, but when it comes to just treating the eyelids, you don't need very much. A retinol eye cream tends to be a lot gentler than a retinol face cream. One big difference I've noticed when testing many retinol face versus eye creams, using them [...] on my face and around my eyes, is that the facial ones tend to be more inclined to melt into your eyes, as opposed to the eye one."

"What I love about the RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream is that the formula is specifically formulated with a retinol concentration that's appropriate for the eye area. So it's not so aggressive that it's going to cause problems, but it's effective enough to make a real difference over time. It's really lightweight, fast absorbing, which matters around the eyes because heavier formulas tend to just migrate into the eyes and cause irritation."

"I'm personally using the RoC retinol eye cream just because pigmentation's not so much of an issue for me. I wanted my main ingredient to be retinol and I really trust RoC around my eyes. [...] I have very sensitive eyes and ocular rosacea, so RoC retinol eye cream does a better job for me."

"My other eye cream I use very often and I'm on probably third or fourth bottle just recently is the RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream. If I want something really more focused on fine lines and texture, I'll use this retinol eye cream instead. It's a really nice option because it gives you the benefit of a retinoid, but it's formulated for the eyes, so it's not going to cause too much dryness like your tretinoin would."

"It supports skin turnover, which can help prevent millia by reducing keratin buildup over time. It's also super lightweight, super fast absorbing compared to a lot of the other eye creams I've tried. And this lowers the risk of occlusion related millia. The key ingredient is the retinol which helps improve that cell turnover, smooths the fine lines, helps prevent keratin from being trapped underneath the skin."

"I recommend this a lot in the clinic. It targets three signs of eye aging: the dark circles, the de-puffing, and it's clinically proven to reduce the look of eye wrinkles by up to 50%. It's designed for dramatic results but it's gentle enough for daily use around the delicate eye area. Whenever starting a new eye cream you may want to consider patch testing. Apply it to a small area close to the eye, on that skin where you would be using it, not somewhere else."

"RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream is their bestselling product and I can see why. I've been recommending this a lot to my patients over the years. It's a gentle retinol product that patients have used around the eyes. [...] I'm okay with retinol, over-the-counter retinol products around the eyes, especially those that are formulated for the eyelid skin. [...] Just use a small amount for around the eyes and use your ring finger to gently tap in the product."

"This very popular $20 retinal eye cream yes it looks very small but it's formulated really well for the eye. I think it might be RoC's number one selling product. They have studies, which is very rare in the skin care world, working on dark circles and puffiness and also the fine lines around the eyes. I'd say out of everything the fine lines like the crow's feet you'll get the best results for that."

"And I have to say that that's the biggest challenge is to get a nice product that will give you that glow without the irritation because a lot of times people associate irritation with a retinoid. "In terms of eye creams, the only retinol eye cream that I have used personally the longest without irritation and my patients is RoC Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream. You can apply it within the orbital bone but be very careful. I would moisturize with it, be careful of irritation, do not get it within your conjunctival lid, not too close to the eye. Keep that in mind."

"The skin around your eyelids can still benefit from using a retinol as long as it's properly formulated for that eyelid skin, with lower concentrations than what you'd use on your face, and it can help with dark circles and increase skin thickness. "One of the ones I often recommend to my own patients is the RoC Retinol Correxion eye cream. It's not terribly expensive and it's an OG eye cream, it's been around a long time, and it has a retinol specifically formulated for sensitive under eye skin. It's a much less expensive over the counter option compared to the retinol eye cream we use in the office."

"But what I don't like about this product is that they do not tell you the percent of the retinol, and retinol is one of those ingredients that I really do think you need to understand the type of retinol that you're using and the percentage that you're using. But it is lower on the ingredient list, so it makes me think that it's probably not as strong as it appears. There's no hyaluronic acid in this particular product. I love the dispenser and there's no scent."

"It's 19 and the ingredients are first water so it's going to be an emulsion, then it's glycerin so that's a humectant holding water in the top of your skin, then it's got emollient preventing water from evaporating, then it's got retinol which is fine, a fraction of a percent, panthenol which is anti-inflammatory, ascorbic acid which might be a bit irritating. I do like it but it would be better if this was in an airless pump."

"It has glycerin, lactic acid, and some standard smoothing agents, plus panthenol, which can be nice for the under eye area. I like this ingredient list, I think I'm going to get this one. "I really recommend an eye cream that contains a retinol to target fine lines and dark circles, and the Roc Retinol Correxion Line Smoothing Eye Cream is number one. RoC is a very well respected brand with really great formulation in the retinol space, and it's a really nice one for crow's feet, dark circles, and the age-related changes around the eyes. It's also a very lightweight cream lotion, so it's not going to cause heaviness or clog the skin."

"I recommend retinol in the context of supporting collagen and improving fine lines and crow's feet, but in this context, it certainly can improve cellular turnover and gently remove that pigment that's sitting on top of the delicate eyelid skin. It has a lot of patents and years of clinical data, and it's really hydrating."

"It pisses me off to no end that I love this one so much, because they don't tell you the concentration and they don't tell you much about the retinol itself, but they did do a ton of studies on this product showing that it works. The reason I like it is because it's very gentle. I use it as the under eye cream like it was meant to be used, but I've also had people use it around their lips for hyperpigmentation and lines, and it does so well on sensitive skin."

"The RoC retinol eye cream, I'm bothered that I like that one so much because this is a brand that's not super transparent with the concentration encapsulation, so I love it. So that has actually [...] been a game changer in my household for retinol products."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Retinoids

Retinoids are among the best studied ingredients in dermatology, with solid evidence for acne and for the fine lines and rough texture that come from sun exposure. Dryness and flaking in the first few weeks are common and usually settle.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
