What the gurus are saying

Tone-up sunscreens divide opinion here. One dermatologist sees potential for those after an even, dewy look, though she wouldn't pick it herself. Another expert finds tone-up formulas generally struggle to absorb naturally into skin, which is her core concern with the category overall. If you're drawn to the tone-up effect, it might be worth testing on a small area first to see how it sits on your skin.

"If you want a more even smooth tone with slightly more dewy finish this would be a good sunscreen to try. It's very much [...] hydrating and offers a little subtle glow. I actually think it's a great makeup primer to use in addition to sunscreen. [...] It also contains titanium dioxide which is offering that tone up effect, and adenosine which is an ingredient that boosts cellular energy [...] and may have some anti-aging benefits."

"Personally I don't love tone up sunscreens. I just don't find tone up sunscreens ever really fully absorb and look natural on skin, and I always feel like tone up sunscreens should end up doubling maybe as foundation, that's kind of the goal of them to make your skin look glowy and just go on with your routine. I just find that they never really end up feeling that nice. They just end up feeling kind of like a sunscreen with a white cast, that's kind of what they always end up feeling like."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
