What the gurus are saying

This mattifying, moisturizing chemical sunscreen earns strong praise from reviewers for how lovely it feels on skin and its excellent water-resistant performance during outdoor activities and vacation use. Its fragrance and chemical formula are clear dealbreakers for those with ingredient sensitivities, however. At $50, some reviewers find it quite difficult to justify the premium price over simpler, fragrance-free alternatives.

"Shiseido is exactly like Lancome in my mind, I do not think I can use these because of their fragrance blend. That said, I do like Shiseido, I think they're a great company. [...] I cannot use their sunscreen for whatever reason, probably [...] because of my sensitivities to chemical sunscreens, but I do trust in them, these are probably very nice."

"Over the years I've tried this numerous times via samples, and it does not do it for me. It's a chemical sunscreen, it has fragrance, and I like to avoid fragrance in sunscreens in particular. [...] It is tinted, but the tint is not going to work out so well for everyone, it's kind of a peachy pink tint that ends up blending in pretty much sheer. It also has some antioxidants in it."

"The Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF 50 feels really nice and mattifying on your skin. It's actually gorgeous to put on. I take that with me on vacations, I put that in my bag like that is my go-to for outdoor water resistant, if I'm sweating sunscreen. I love that one."

"If you've tried the original Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector, I find that sunscreen very moisturizing on the skin as well."

"I always typically go for the pretty much iconic ultimate sun protector in the blue bottle which let's face it is just one of the best. They had their wet force technology and then their synchro shield repair. These technologies work harder and give us better protection when they're being attacked."

"If you've tried the original Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector, I find that sunscreen very moisturizing on the skin as well."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
