What the gurus are saying

Experts split on whether stronger exfoliation comes without irritation. The higher glycolic acid earns praise for delivering more noticeable exfoliation while staying gentle, though concerns persist that the increased potency adds irritation rather than improves skin.

"I've had no trouble using AlphaRet Intensive either, which just has a little higher glycolic acid so you get a little more exfoliation. It's still very gentle on the skin."

"They also have an intense one that one actually has a higher concentration of glycolic acid. Personally I don't think it's necessary. I think if anything it's just going to add more irritation. If you are somebody who's been on AlphaRet for a while, your skin is used to it and you're looking for a little bit higher kick, then you can go to the AlphaRet Intensive. I probably wouldn't start there though."

"The one I talk about a lot on the channel is SkinBetter Science Intensive AlphaRet or just the regular OG AlphaRet. This is nice because it's a retinoid with alpha hydroxy acids like lactic acid and it has glycolic acid. If you go at the Intensive AlphaRet, that's more glycolic acid than the AlphaRet that just has a smaller percentage of glycolic acid."

Dermatologist Compares: SkinBetter Science AlphaRet vs Alto- how to use them in your routine!
"If you want to start off and you have sensitive skin, don't go with the Intensive. [...] You want to do this at bedtime because these retinoids are usually photosensitive, so you want to do it at night time so that you get your full benefits from your retinoid. This is usually on dry skin, so wash your face, make sure it's dry, and then apply your full pea-size amount to your entire face. You can do little dots and then connect the dots, and then use your moisturizer afterwards."
