What the gurus are saying

This serum earns consistent praise as a multitasking hydrator that plumps and softens fine lines, though dermatologists split on its azelaic acid strength. Several gurus highlight its ability to work alongside treatments like Botox or stand alone for hydration, and it's a go-to for those targeting pigmentation over redness. One dermatologist finds the 3% azelaic acid too dilute to tackle redness effectively, so best suited for pigmentation concerns rather than redness. The greenish tint may offer mild redness support, but the real strength here lies in the arbutin and hyaluronic acid for plumping and brightness.

"Normally I would spend this much money on a vitamin C serum because I love the one from Geek and Gorgeous this one I got in the space NK Advent calendar"

"It's a hydrating serum that I think kind of goes beyond just basic hydration. It's really a plumping hydrating serum that contains Proxalin, which is a molecule that's unique to L'Oreal and it's a sugar molecule that's been shown to basically help reduce glycation on collagen and elastin that occurs with aging and that basically damages and makes them less effective."

"I think of this as beyond just a hydrating serum. You can certainly use it like that, but it's a multitasking serum. You can use it to spot treat areas that have fine lines and wrinkles to help soften those areas locally, or to complement your neurotoxin injection, AKA Botox injections, to further improve those fine lines and wrinkles, or maybe even help to prolong the effects of your Botox. The ingredients are really fascinating."

"SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier is a good product with peptides and lipids, though it contains essential oils which some people may find irritating."

"Skinceuticals has a product that combines three percent azelaic acid, which is slightly too light so kind of useless in my book, with two percent arbutin which is actually a sweet spot. I would use this more for the arbutin effects than the azelaic effect. [...] It is greenish so if you have redness it can slightly help, but I don't think three percent azelaic acid is going to be enough. I would not buy this for redness. I would buy this if you have more pigmentation issues."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
