What the gurus are saying

One dermatologist found this the most effective cleansing balm she has used and especially praised it for sensitive skin, noting how little product is needed and how gentle it is on delicate areas. However, several beauty reviewers felt it was pleasant but average for the price, and one noted it doesn't rinse as cleanly on its own (though a second cleanse fixes that). What most reviewers consistently loved was the built-in scoop in the cap and how compact and travel-friendly the jar is. Those with sensitive skin or who find cleansing a chore may find the investment worthwhile; those watching their budget may want to try a sample first.

"I bulk ordered it for myself. We try a ton of cleansing balms, we use cleansing balms maybe more than almost any other product, and it's still one of my all-time favorites. It just works, period. You can try lots of cleansers out, they have a fragrance-free one and they have a fragranced one, you can go with either quite honestly because you're going to wash your face again right afterwards."

"Tatcha Indigo Cleansing Balm, this stuff was okay. I'm glad I didn't buy the full size because the full size of it was really expensive and it was just kind of average to me. I didn't hate it, I just didn't love love it."

"I've just been using this a lot, I'm more than halfway through with it. I especially love that it has this little scoop that is just built into it. [...] It's especially easy to travel with because it's like kind of compact but you get a decent amount of cleansing balm into it, and it has this, you know, it's just so nifty, everything about it. It is fragrance-free. It's a pretty standard cleansing balm, so some people might find it to be expensive."

EMPTIES! Reviewing the Skincare, Makeup, & Body Care Products I've Finished | Beauty with Susan Yara
"I wouldn't say I'd love this cleansing balm but it's a really fine cleansing balm. It doesn't have any fragrance. It comes with a little disc [...] in the cap that makes it really easy to scoop out. It's a really nice fine cleansing balm, it's a little bit boring, it doesn't rinse beautifully but if you go in with your second cleanse it doesn't matter."

"I've been using the Tatcha Indigo Cleansing Balm. [...] The thing I like about this most is one, I love this little disc in here that helps you scoop up the cleansing balm. [...] It's fragrance-free and it's really soothing for the skin because it's part of the Indigo collection that Tatcha has. I've been enjoying this, it's a really nice cleansing balm."

"This is the most effective cleansing balm that I have ever used. You really don't need a lot, so even though this probably has half as much product as the other one, it took me the same amount of time to go through it. As soon as I opened this, I don't think I touched another first cleansing step until this was completely gone. I've already repurchased another one because it is so so good. If you have sensitive skin, I think this is an amazing cleansing balm."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
