What the gurus are saying

This pure squalane oil excels at locking in hydration and repairing the skin barrier, particularly when layered after serums or incorporated into a slugging routine. However, those with dull skin shouldn't expect it to address underlying dullness, as the oil adds shine without necessarily fixing what makes skin look lackluster. It absorbs nicely and works well across all skin types.

"You can put your serums on and then if you're really serum-based and you want to repair your skin barrier without having so many creams on, you can put your squalane on afterwards and it's fantastic for locking in the moisture. You can incorporate squalane into your slugging protocol as well. Just remember to make sure that the squalane in your products is sourced from plant-based rather than animal-based sources, since squalane was previously derived from shark livers, which isn't humane."

I Recreated Kim's SKKN Routine with The Inkey List For Under $90 Dollars
"When that squalene gets hydrogenated, then it becomes squalane. [...] Squalane has antioxidant benefits, seals in moisture into the skin, almost identical to what our skin naturally produces but it's more stable. This is a phenomenal night oil if you don't want to spend this kind of money. You've got 10 bucks and [...] you can afford to put an oil on your face every night for a month, whereas with the SKKN oil at $95, there are so many other things you could buy."
15 Worst and Best Squalane Products
"With The Inkey List the squalane is a little bit better. This is also one hundred percent squalane so very similar, like straight from the manufacturer, it's just as pure as you can get, but for some reason this formula tends to soak in a little bit better for me. It tends to be a little bit less of that dry oiliness on the skin. [...] The Inky List one absorbs a little bit better and it leaves you that dry touch oily feeling whereas the Indeed Labs one it's just not as cosmetically elegant."
Is Your Skin Dull? here Are The 5 Best Products From The Inkey List To Deal With It
"The Inkey List also has a Squalane Oil that I really like because it's nice and lightweight. However, if you have lackluster dull skin, I wouldn't recommend that oil because it adds a bit of glowiness but it doesn't necessarily help with just that dullness that we sometimes see in skin. It's like something could still be dull if you add a layer of oil on top. [...] The Squalane Oil does absorb quite nicely, but when deciding between the Squalane Oil and the CoQ10, the CoQ10 wins hands down."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
