What the gurus are saying

The lack of transparency about concentration is a real sticking point for one expert, who warns that without knowing the strength you can't match it to your skin's sensitivity level and may waste money or irritate your skin. However, other gurus praise it as a gentle, affordable starting point for those new to vitamin C, and note it pairs well with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. Best approached as an entry-level option, with a patch test first if your skin tends toward sensitivity.

"It's a beautiful derivative vitamin C. It's got [...] vitamin E. [...] They put nothing in here to strengthen the skin barrier or to increase cell turnover. But I actually really like this as a simple cheap vitamin C. So if you're thinking about starting vitamin C and you've never done it before, this is a really good place to start. You don't get additional benefits, but you are getting what you pay for, which is better than I can say for a lot of the products I'm looking at right now."

"The reason I'm calling this out is because they don't disclose the percentage. There is no point putting a vitamin C on your skin if you don't know what strength it's in. That's because vitamin C is a little bit on the irritating side. You need to know what you're using. If you have a very sensitive skin type, you're going to want to go in for something in a 5 to 10% concentration."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.
