What the gurus are saying

The lightweight formula and convenient clicker earn praise for effortless, non-greasy application. However, it builds up on the skin faster than comparable sunscreen sticks, so those sensitive to visible product may want to use a lighter hand.

"The Tocobo stick built up on my skin a lot faster than the other two. The technical term for this is 'it gives better payout'."

"The last one is the Tocobo sunstick, the blue one. Its texture is in the middle of the first two products, but the finish is matte, [...] softer when applied than Beauty of Joseon's. It's recommended for oily and combo skin, for dry skin it's a bit dry to apply to the face. A sunstick like this works really well for touch ups, it's so easy, you can put it everywhere, even on short sleeves on the body."

"This is the Tocobo Cotton Sun Stick SPF50+ PA++++. It's a little bit more of a soft matte finish, that's the word they use to describe it. I like this category because I find sun sticks easy to apply over makeup, though there's a catch, it's easy to apply over light makeup and not heavy makeup."

"Tocobo, the same one I just talked about, has a sunscreen stick. [...] I love the clicker, it just feels very very very efficient. It's very lightweight and it doesn't feel greasy at all."

"What I love about this one is how it absorbs excess sebum. It doesn't mattify your skin, it keeps that glow but takes away any greasiness. So if you are extra oily, this sunscreen is going to make you oily, but of course your natural oils are going to come through, so this is a really nice one to take that shine away while supplying protection. It's got a micronized powder that absorbs sebum and excess oil but applies so thinly. It's like a powder in stick form but it's also sunscreen."

"I love the TOCOBO cotton soft sun stick, SPF50+ PA4+, another matte finished sunscreen which I don't usually like, but [...] if you get an oily T-zone like me, [...] this sunstick has a mattifying powder that when you glide over the top brings your skin back down to a natural looking skin glow, not overly dewy, not overly matte."

"There's a really fine oil-absorbing powder in here, and at first I didn't like the sound of that because I don't like matte skin, but it's not like that at all. All it does is take you from a day of grease back to glowing again. It makes reapplication really easy and fuss-free, with good coverage so you can feel exactly where you're going and where you've covered it. I'm really enjoying this as a reapplication throughout the day."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
