What the gurus are saying

Effectiveness depends on hair type. Some find it delivers shine and heat protection in a lightweight texture, making it easy to add between washes; others report it looks greasy on dry hair and produces minimal visible benefit, possibly making hair slightly static prone. At $5, the low price point makes it worth testing on a small section first to see how your specific hair responds.

"For $5 you can't go wrong, especially with this texture and the ingredients. I think it's a great steal. It adds shine and helps with conditioning and moisturization, and it also offers heat protection. If [...] I'm needing a little bit of additional protection before I curl or straighten my hair, this type of hair serum can really offer [...] that. Not only are you getting additional nourishment to your hair, but you're also getting that heat protection."

"This is not as good as the Function of Beauty one. I can't tell that it does anything. I think it's more helpful if you've got frizzy hair, maybe it helps with that, maybe if you have curly hair it might help [...] tame the curl pattern, but for me it just doesn't do anything. If I put it on wet hair it makes my hair smell like coconut, which I like, but the following morning when my hair is completely dry it's like I don't even have anything on there."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
