What the gurus are saying

The packaging has a significant flaw that lets vitamin C oxidize before you even open the bottle, turning it deep yellow and potentially triggering sensitivity instead of brightening skin. One dermatologist praises the formula itself (it layers two stable vitamin C forms with tranexamic acid for fading dark marks and has a pleasant texture) but the oxidation issue means what reaches your skin may not be what was promised. That said, not many takes are in yet, so there is not much to go on beyond these two perspectives.

"It's oxidizing inside the packaging, I've tried cleaning it out with toothpicks and it's not the right color, it shouldn't be this deep yellow. Because of a packaging flaw it's oxidizing on the shelf before people even buy it, and oxidized vitamin C can increase sensitivity, which is probably why it's not working for a lot of people. I did forgive Tula and went back to buying their other products, but I can't use this one."

"The Tula Vitamin C Moisturizer has a clear pump system, and [...] the vitamin C would get exposed to light and air, so you would see brown gunk at the tip every time you tried to pump the product out."

"Tula actually also has an amazing option for a vitamin C moisturizer, smells a little bit like oranges so that may be a pro or con to you depending on your preference, but that one does have THD in it as well as [3-O-ethyl] ascorbic acid but it also has ferulic acid and tranexamic acid to help your skin tone and fade dark spots so it is a really amazing product."

"This one is going to be great for brightening the skin and fading dark marks. Not only does it have vitamin C, I think it's two forms of vitamin C, one of them is tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate which is a very stable form of vitamin C that I love in moisturizers like this one, and then it has tranexamic acid which is a very strong ingredient that can help hyperpigmentation of the skin."
I Stopped Using Vitamin C Serum | Anti-aging Skincare Routine #GRWM
"This one is thicker and a little more moisturizing but still really nice to rub into the skin and wear in the morning time. This one has a little bit of a scent to it from some extracts. [...] When you put this on your skin it gets converted to L-ascorbic acid, which is the most active form of vitamin C, [...] but it's more stable and easier to formulate. This product is amazing—this is actually what I'm using most mornings for over a month now and I really love it."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Tranexamic acid

Tranexamic acid has a growing body of clinical evidence for melasma and the stubborn patches of pigment that other ingredients struggle with.
