What the gurus are saying

The whipped texture is what gurus keep coming back to, and it cuts both ways. Some find it fun and easy to spread, while others call it greasy, and its airy foam makes it tricky to tell how much you've applied. Acne-prone or coconut-sensitive skin may want to steer clear, and the foam can sting the eyes, while its dessert-like packaging means small children should be kept well away from it.

"I bought quite a few of the whipped sunscreens from Vacation on a pretty good discount. I think it's fun, but it's really hard to figure out if you're using the correct amount because it's whipped. I do prefer the SPF 50, but I got an incredible deal on the SPF 30, and I think we in the skincare community do tend to underestimate SPF 30. It still blocks 97% of the sun's rays if you apply enough."

ULTA 21 Days of Beauty: What to AVOID & My Top Picks!
"This is a mousse sunscreen, so it's a lot harder to eyeball how much you're using than a liquid. It's technically a chemical sunscreen that includes ingredients that irritate me, so every time I use it I get a little itchy, and I will definitely never use this one on my face. I've only ever used it for touch up purposes."

"The vacation brand kind of blurs the lines between sunscreen, which is an over-the-counter medication, and this whipped topping in a can. It looks very similar. Meaning for a small child, you run the risk that they see that foam packaging kind of looks like dessert with the marketing materials. Could they accidentally mistake it for whipped topping and ingest a bunch of it?"

"I just don't see how people actually like using this. I mean it's so oily and greasy, like everything people are always complaining about with sunscreens being shiny and oily, and then this seems to be like one of the most popular selling of their line. I don't get it. I mean it's really like putting baby oil on your skin."

"I tried this and reviewed [...] the whole brand. At the time, I didn't care for this, but if it gets people to apply sunscreen, I'm all for it, because it is kind of fun. I could see having this at a pool party. That being said, it stung my eyes, it made my eyes water, so it's not great [...] around the eye area. It looks okay on the face, it is water resistant, and it spreads on the skin really well, it doesn't feel greasy or anything."

"The Vacation Classic Whip SPF 30 to me is the better product. For the price though, it's $ [...] 22, and honestly, the Vacation to me is the better product, but at that price point versus alternatives, it comes down to your budget."

"My first outing with the sunscreen I hated it because I used it before surfing and I found that this sunscreen was extremely irritating when it got in my eyes. So if you're going to be running, sweating, maybe in the water and active, not a sensitive skin, sensitive eyeball sunscreen, not gentle at all. But from the experience standpoint, this will probably elevate your beach trip. It will probably create some nostalgia to go along with whatever adventure you're having. Love this sunscreen."

"It's actually the most affordable option. It's $26 for 1.7 ounces. Now, the clear sunscreens are usually more expensive to formulate, so it is nice to get one at this price point. [...] This one is a beautiful sunscreen."
Best Products of the Year (part 3): Best Device, Best for Sensitive Skin, Best Moisturizer
"This embodies summer to me, it's just so fun. All the products from Vacation are pretty fragrance to the moon, but they have this retro, there's something about this like retro 80s Beach life that is just so iconic. They really focused on that in all of their packaging. Everything just feels like 80s Miami Beach vibes to me. Super cool branding."

"Vacation has their whipped sunscreen, which was honestly the only sunscreen my husband was willing to put on his body on our last vacation because he loved the texture. He loves whipped cream and [...] desserts. I think he almost thought he could eat it until he realized he could not."

"I didn't feel like this protected me as well and I don't know if it's the formula, if it's an SPF 30 or if it's the fact that it's aerated so I couldn't figure out how much to apply to my skin. This would be one of my absolute favorite sunscreens if it didn't break anything out, but if you're sensitive to coconut this has coconut in it and if you're acne prone, fragrance sensitive, stay away."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
